Mat (Matthew Charles) Lloyd (born 25th May 1978 Aldershot, England) is a performance poet and skateboard activist often referred to as 'The Skater Poet', he is well known in the UK alternative scene. Mat spent most of his childhood living between the UK and Germany where his father was serving in the British Armed Forces. He started writing poetry or ‘Rhymes’ as he dubbed them at the age of 13 after discovering rap music. He had his first piece published at the age of 14 and his first ever public reading was at 16 at Dallam School 6th Form College. Mat was widely published as a teen however shied away from publication after he left full time education. He continued to write and didn’t take his poems to the stage until his early twenties. Then slowly but surely he developed into the force he is today. He has many achievements under his belt including; winning Poetry Idol, performing on numerous occasions at the prestigious Jazz Café in Camden, Cargo in Shoreditch and the Edinburgh Festival in 2006.

Mat is a passionate skateboarder and rides regularly every week, and is often seen at London’s Bay 66 skate park. He sights Gil Scot Heron, Ice-T and Benjamin Zephaniah as just a few of his influences. Mat has had brief stints in bands including the Hip Hop group ‘Dope and Cash’ and the funk band ‘Zoot Suit’ however has never committed and always returned to Performance Poetry. As well as poetry Mat founded Hemel Skates a group created to ‘fight’ for facilities in his local town that ended up getting a £90,000 installation and still regularly assists other groups all over the UK. Mat is currently working with the Consumer Action Group in the UK, Don’t TV, and launching his own non-profit skateboard company Discipline Skateboards. He is a member of the Raison D'etre collective and the Lazy Gramophone Family. He performs regularly all over the UK. |
