News and stuff...

27 October 2009

Last Friday was the final night of the Short Cuts Film Festival, and therefore the night they announce the winner of Best Film.

I sat in screen 1 of the EMPIRE Cinema, just pretty stoked to see 'Blokes' on a big screen, with 100 or so other competition finalists, actors, Directors, judges, festival organisers and sponsors. We watched all ten of the competition finalists and I can assure you the benchmark was set extremely high from the moment the first film hit the screen! Blokes was fifth up and looked great on the big screen, thanks to the talents of animator Mat Frodsham, who created the images in HD.

After the screening each of the ten finalist were called up to be presented with a framed certificate which reads, "The jury of the 2nd annual ShortCuts Film Festival recognise Blokes as a work of notable merit, and therefore worthy of induction into the ShortCuts Official selection for 2009"

I was pretty chuffed with my certificate and sat back down after the group photo. Then Darren Cliff, MD of Cliff Productions and festival organiser took centre stage to announce the award. He listed three films that were vying for the top prize: Touched By A Stranger, Mr Thornton’s Change Of Heart and Blokes. He began to explain but then stopped in his tracks and announced, "the Winner of Best Film is Blokes!" Wow I was blown away!!!

Safe to say, the after show party is a bit of a blur! Four days later I'm still grinning from ear to ear!

Performing at life is Beautiful for DIY WOMPThe Short Cuts Film Festival began yesterday and 'Blokes' is showing tonight at Buckingham’s The Film Place from 7:30pm. Unfortunatley I can not attend as I’ll be at the Soho Theatre hosting Apples & Snakes; however I’ll be very nervous knowing people will have paid to see it. I will be at Friday’s screening at the EMPIRE Cinema in Wycombe, not only that, I will also be performing at the after show party.

Please take a moment to check out Sad Panda Clothing as they have been kind enough to send me free stuff! The company supports skateboarding, extreme sports and is now supporting/sponsoring your honourable skater poet... me! So you will see me wearing a number of items looking similar to the one I’m wearing on the right. Thanks to Rich Beaumont for the photo!

Please check out there MySpace and online shop.

As I mentioned last month ‘Blokes’ had been submitted for the ‘Short Cuts Film Festival’ and Mat Frodsham and I were waiting to hear if it had been picked. Well, not only has it been picked up, it’s been official selected for the festivals prize! The festival runs from the 20th till the 23rd and will be showing in Aylesbury, Buckingham, Pinewood Studios and the final day is at the EMPIRE Cinema in Wycombe. Blokes will be shown in Buckingham at ‘The Film Place’ on Wednesday the 21st of October as part of ‘The Second Cut’ screening from 7:30pm. The day features a whole host of activities and screening from 4:30pm.

Your final chance to see ‘Blokes’ on the big screen will be on the Friday as part of the ‘Competition Cut’ screening, we’ll also find out if we’ll be walking away with one of the festivals converted awards!

01 October 2009

I have been asked to host the prestigious ‘Apples & Snakes’ at the Soho Theatre later this month! The night will feature the talents of poet and novelist Patrick Neate, with support from; Kate Tempest, Joshua Idehen and Helen Mort. I have been on a mission to get involved with Apples & Snakes for a while and an opportunity arose couple of months back. I thrust a copy of my ‘Blokes’ DVD into Russell’s (the head honcho) hands, and requested he gave it a spin. Lucky for me Francesca Beard gave him a nudge after we met in July and he finally fed it to his DVD player!

I know it’s been a while, all my fault of course! Just a couple of things of note in between hosting Oral Cabaret and a number of gigs here and there for RRRANTS. SLAM IDOL show number 282 was released today and features an oldie by me. Think Simon wanted to release a show as he gets ready to start the next SLAM IDOL video competition. The video for the poem ‘Blokes’ will be in the running and as a previous winner I would like to keep a clean sheet, so I’ll be calling on you all again to vote!

Talking of ‘Blokes’; the video has been submitted for the ‘Short Cuts Film Festival’, which happens at the end of October. I should know soon whether it has been accepted, fingers crossed!

Photo by the very talented Kati Jackson...The last few days have been crazy and are the culmination of some very hard work. Saturday saw the official launch of my first collection DEMO TAPE which has been released in conjunction with a new video BLOKES. The book is published by LULU and is available direct from this site, LULU and AMAZON.COM in the US. It will appear on AMAZON.CO.UK in the next few weeks and all good bookstores thereafter. If you want to order it the ISBN is 978-1-4092-6270-1.

The book launch was well attended with nearly everyone who was invited making the night. After a few drinks i took the stage to introduce the book and eventually after a few poems premier the new video. The night was a huge success and keep your eyes peeled for a write up in the Gazette this week.

Sunday was the Lazy Gramophone Festival and my first official public outing with the book. Managed to sell a few more copies and the feedback has been very positive. Many people have asked when the next one will be out!!! Need to plug this one first!

Sunday I was having some promo shots done by Kati Jackson who not only is an old friend of mine (well i new her man first) but is also a great photographer! CHeck out the photo above. Her shots will be appearing slowly but surely over the next few months as I promote the book. If you like the shots and want to hire her, give her a shout on email kati@nappysnaps.com

Check out the new video on my official YouTube Channel - matlloydpoet.

As I mentioned there's quite a few things in the pipeline. First there's my next official video, which happened by shear chance but is all thanks to Matthew Frodsham who is in his words "a graphic designer/motion designer from Warrington with the usual amount of 'too much' work" He currently works for two studios in Liverpool and is working on finishing his degree! Check out some of his work on his Vimeo page. It is currently taking an hour to animate a second of the poem, should be ready by May!

Also coming is a video for "2Inches2aBeat" / "Two Inches to the Right", more info coming soon and of course dropping in April is the much hinted at "Demo Tape", I will reveal all soon!

So the Verve gig went down, and it was a lot of fun. I believe there may be more in the future based on the success of this event. As well as some great bands also performing was the loverly 'Dockers MC', if you haven't already checked her out, GO AND DO IT NOW! Due to some technical difficulties I managed to rope her man into filming my spot. Check out the video on my new YOUTUBE channel.

Two DJ's from BBC Cambridge hosted the show and it recieved some good coverage on the BBC Cambridge website.

Speakers (ten minute talks): the head of illustration for the cambridge school of illustration, a cambridge fashion designer currently working for Vivien Westwood.

Discipline Skateboards put out a short video documenting a recent weekend get together. I get a very brief bit of screen time so check it out, nothing too professional, but it was a lot of fun putting it together.

After supporting Elvis McGonagal as part of the ‘Poetry Link’ tour and also on the opening night of The Malting Arts Theatre’s ‘Oral Cabaret’, I was asked if I wanted to be the host of the latter on a regular basis. I tend to shy away from any regular commitments that might get in the way of gigs but; it’s local, it’s only once a month, it’s bringing spoken word to Hertfordshire and to top it off I get paid!

Well last night was my first night as host and I was a little nervous. The crowd was small but very responsive, the support was great and the headline act was ‘Excentral Tempest’, and if you’ve seen Kate before you’ll know she’s incredible. I did a few of my own but also a couple by other poets to give the crowd a nice selection.

The next one is in the new year on the 28th of January with headliner Jude Simpson performing as part of the Poetry Live Tour. You can book tickets for Oral Cabaret by contacting the Malting Arts Theatre direct on 01727 844222, tickets are just £5.

15 November 2008

I will be performing at Qords, something a little different at Kingston University, here's a little info from the organisers;

"AfroCentriQ-city is the theme of the evening. As a curator I thought it wise to go on an anthropological journey exploring not just origins (Cuz personally I'm tired of performing for Black History month, in the sense that I not only wish to dwell on Black History, but wanna look into Black Future... if it makes sense)but explore our present state of being and how we work well with one another, irrespective of origin or believe, That way together we can better advance."

Sounds like it's going to be an interesting night! Get your butts down to Kingston and come see!

A small article appeared in this weeks Gazette covering the recent Oral Cabaret in St. Albans. I was also interviewed on the night by the Gazettes Abeena Baily organised to film the show and has posted the interview online.

Click HERE to read the article and follow the link for the interview, it also contains excerpts from my performance supporting Elvis McGonagall.

01 October 2008

I will be supporting Elvis McGonagall in The Poetry Links latest tour. Stand-up poet, armchair revolutionary and recumbent rocker, Elvis McGonagall was the 2006 World Slam Champion, the compere of the notorious Blue Suede Sporran Club and is one of the poets occasionally in residence on BBC Radio 4’s “Saturday Live”.

Come check out Elvis and myself on the final stop on the tour at the Maltings Arts Theatre in St. Albans!

http://www.truetube.co.uk/media.php?do=detail&mediaid=749Yesterday I was interviewed for True Tube! TrueTube is currently producing a series of short films on the issue of art and invited me to be part of the debate. They want to investigate how art can be used as a force for good and positive change. One of the films they are putting together is investigating the powerfulness of the written word and how art doesn’t necessarily need to be in an art gallery in order to reach people!

So Rosanne and Keira, a couple of the people behind True Tube, dragged their cameras down to Hemel to spend an hour or two interviewing me. I had previously met Keira at Camp Bestival where she told me a little about True Tube and what it was about. Click on the True Tube logo and go and check it out. Think of it as YouTube without all the crap!

The first film should be up late this month and I'll be sure to mail the world when it appears.

International PEN - Insulting Cabaret Webpage

A Little about International PEN (from their website):

'In time of division between countries, International PEN is one of the rare institutions to keep a bridge constantly open' Mario Vargas Llosa

Originally founded in 1921 to promote literature, today International PEN has 145 Centres in 104 countries across the globe. It recognises that literature is essential to understanding and engaging with other worlds; if you can't hear the voice of another culture how can you understand it?

Our primary goal is to engage with, and empower, societies and communities across cultures and languages, through reading and writing. We believe that writers can play a crucial role in changing and developing civil society. We do this through the promotion of literature, international campaigning on issues such as translation and freedom of expression and improving access to literature at international, regional and national levels.

Well my usual quite end to the year wasn't so. The Tate Modern gig was huge and the feedback was great. Considering I'd been hired as a filler the reaction was incredible. Over 450 people in the crowd and a reported 700 turned up!

I've been confirmed for Bestival this year to do a little spoken word along side Mr. Scroobius Pip and I'll also be doing Lazy Gramophones Festival in London.

I am currently working on a short zombie film that will feature my poetry and a little acting by me too. Keep your eyes on Ill Advised web site for more info.

I will also be featured in the Hemel Skates "One Decade" Documentary which should be out later this year!

2008 is shaping up although I won't be doing my first gig until the beginning of March.
